Gravitational Field from Inspiralling Black HolesThis image series depicts a sequence from a general relativistic numerical simulation of orbiting black holes done in March 2002 on the NCSA Itanium Linux Cluster. In the first time ever 3/4 of a full orbit could be computed, showing the merger of the initial two black holes and the ripples of spacetime, known as gravitational waves, which emerge from this event. The data were also used in a TV production for Discovery Channel.
